Despite the fact that the phenomenon of metal theft has reached alarming proportions with a significant impact on the metal trading recycling industry, there is no specific legislative framework for the protection of victims of theft in Greece.
As a result, the general provision of the Penal Code, particularly those involving theft, receipt and disposal of stolen goods apply currently. In practice, therefore, this state of affairs proves insufficient to address the problem making it imperative to harmonize and modernize the legal framework in order to put some obstacles in the resale of illegally acquired metal objects.
